La inmigración japonesa a Cuba comenzó en 1898, y mantuvo un flujo constante hasta 1926. De esta conexión entre dos islas de Asia y del Caribe surgió una comunidad de descendientes con experiencias comunes. Actualmente viven en Cuba alrededor de 1200 descendientes de inmigrantes japoneses; hasta agosto de 2013 solo queda vivo un issei (de una primera ola migratoria en el siglo XX).
La idea de este website es muy simple: documentar aspectos de esta experiencia migratoria. A través de imágenes, testimonios de primera y segunda fuente, documentos visuales, información bibliográfica y análisis, el objetivo del website es adentrarse en las vidas pasadas y presentes de los inmigrantes japoneses y sus descendientes. Dicho de otra manera, documentar formas de ser cubano-japonés o japonés-cubano.
Uno de los ideales del sitio es ser trilingüe o, al menos, bilingüe. Siempre que sea posible se ofrecerán dos o tres versiones de lo escrito: en inglés, en español y/o en japonés. Así se facilita el diálogo.
Japanese immigration to Cuba dates back to 1898, with a steady flow until 1926. This connection between two Asian and Caribbean islands produced a community of descendants with common experiences. Nowadays there are about 1200 Cubans of Japanese descent living in Cuba, with only one issei (from a first wave of immigration) still alive as of August 2013.
The idea of this website is very simple: to document aspects of this migratory experience. Through images, first and second hand testimonies, visual documents, bibliographic information and analysis, the website aims at providing a look into past and present lives of Japanese immigrants and their descendants, that is, into ways of being cubano-japonés or japonés-cubano.
Ideally, it is suppose to function as a trilingual website, or, at least, bilingual, with English, Spanish and/or Japanese versions. In this way we can expand the scope of our dialogue.
日本人のキュバへの移民は１８９８年に始まり、同じ勢いで１９２６年まで続きました。このアジアとカリブ諸島の関わりが同じ移民経験を持つ日系人のコミュニティを作り上げました。２０１３年８月現在、キューバには約１２００人の日系キューバ人が在住、内たった一人の日系一世（最初の移民者）が 生き残っています。
このサイトの目的はとてもシンプルです： 写真、また、移民体験者や、その子孫の方々の証言、映像、書誌的情報や解析、キューバン日本人または日系キューバ人 としての 移民体験者やその子孫に関する過去と現在の様子を提供しているウェブサイトを通して、この移民体験の様子をドキュメントすること。
このサイトを英語、スペイン語、そして日本語の３カ国語 、または、英語、スペイン語の２カ国語で運営する事が理想です。そうする事によって、私たちの意見交換の視野を広げる事ができるからです。
